The 12 Components Of Exceptional Emotional Intelligence – Which Do You Need To Work On?

SHARE

We can all agree that emotional intelligence is something that goes far beyond being likable or having good social skills.

It is also a well-known fact that emotional intelligence is just as important as intellectual intelligence and hard skills when it comes to you – being an exceptional leader in your field. Because designing a better chair will be pointless if you don’t have the skills to convince others why your invention is better and how it can benefit them.

So, do you know which qualities make someone truly emotionally intelligent?

Richard E. Boyatzis and Daniel Goleman, both business school professors, have been working for decades to find out the true meaning of being emotionally intelligent. This pair revealed the 12 essential components of possessing exceptional people skills.

And being nice is not enough.

When we hear the word emotional intelligence, we often assume that that person is empathetic, pleasant, and flexible to any situation.

However, while these are all attractive qualities – if a person has only them they may be too meek or unskilled to share their vision thus making them bad leaders.

According to Boyatzis and Goleman, there is a complement of dozen skills that stand for complete and exceptional EQ. Here is the list of the 12 components:

1. EMOTIONAL SELF-CONTROL

2. EMOTIONAL SELF-AWARENESS

3. POSITIVE OUTLOOK

4. ADAPTABILITY

5. EMPATHY

6. INFLUENCE

7. ORGANIZATIONAL AWARENESS

8. CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

9. ACHIEVEMENT ORIENTATION

10. MENTOR AND COACH

11. TEAMWORK

12. INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Take a minute to review these 12 competencies in your mind, so that you can get a sense of which areas you may need to work on to achieve a perfect emotional intelligence.

Which are your strongest skills? And in which are you failing?
