Matt Cameron is a financial professional from Coquitlam, BC. He loves playing guitar, watching sports, and being with his family. Matt finds joy and balance through these pleasurable activities. We talked to him about how they shape his view on life.
Q: Outside work, what hobbies bring you joy?
Matt Cameron: Music has always been very important to me. I learned guitar by myself, and it’s it’s more than just a hobby. It helps me relax and get creative with making new music or improvising until something clicks. I love watching the Canucks with friends, a lot of great times getting together for sports. I also follow the Seahawks and Blue Jays.
But my biggest happiness comes from spending time with my family. My toddler son is curious and energetic. Teaching him to swim or skate, even trying the guitar, is so much fun, just seeing him learn new things and watching his confidence grow. It’s an amazing feeling to be a dad.
Q: How does playing guitar change your mindset?
Matt Cameron: Playing guitar teaches patience—a lot of consistent effort is needed. You don’t become good overnight. You start by learning some chords and build on that until you play whole songs or create your own music. This process mirrors much of what I do in life—small steps lead to big results.
Playing guitar also keeps me grounded, as it lets me release stress and focus only on music. Everyone needs something like this—a way to escape and recharge. It reminds me to enjoy the journey and not just focus on the end goal.
Q: What’s teaching your son like for you as a parent?
Matt Cameron: Honestly, it’s one of the best parts of my life. Watching my son learn new things, like swimming for the first time or skating, is incredible. Kids see everything with wonder, and it spreads to us, too. It reminds us to slow down and enjoy the small moments.
Teaching challenges me in new ways. I need patience—I must be encouraging and adaptable. Sure, teaching a young child isn’t always easy, but seeing him excited makes it worth it whether he continues or enjoys trying different things. We share experiences and build memories together.
Q: Do your hobbies influence professional aspects of your life?
Matt Cameron: Definitely. Take home improvement projects, for example. Painting and working on a DIY renovation involves problem-solving and creativity. You have to figure out the best methods, adjust as needed, and keep going even if things aren’t perfect the first time.
This approach directly influences how I handle challenges in both life and work. I break tasks into smaller steps, stay flexible, and enjoy finding solutions along the way. My hobbies keep me grounded, teach perseverance, and give fresh perspectives when I need them most.
