Joey Klein, Inner Matrix Systems CEO Describes How to Be More Confident at Work

If you lack confidence in your abilities at work, it’s likely to stifle your career. Fortunately, a lack of confidence is something that can be changed. In this article, Joey Klein, Inner Matrix Systems founder and CEO – a personal mastery training system for high achievers – shares practical tips to help people become more confident in the workplace.

Inner Matrix Systems’ personal mastery training program employs a powerful synthesis of the art of mindfulness and the science of neurobiology. The IMS method was developed to rewire, train, and align the nervous system, emotions, and thought strategies to facilitate powerful life changes. Increasing an individual’s confidence in the workplace is a perfect fit for this approach to positive personal growth:

  1. Map it

Identify what you want to achieve and what you want the outcome to be in as much detail as possible. Write down the areas in which you wish to increase your confidence. Be specific and detailed. Create a written narrative that describes how you will feel and act when you have developed the confidence you want.

Next, describe where you are now in relation to the vision you described above. This will become your map. It shows where you are now and where you want to end up.

You may find it helpful to pattern your expectations after a reliable and appropriate role model. Someone that you would like to emulate. Be careful, however. Avoid comparing your worst against someone else’s best. Remember that you only see what others want you to know about them, so don’t assume they don’t have shortcomings, frailties and even suffer from a lack of self-confidence from time to time.

  1. Align it

Once you have your vision and outcome mapped with some possible benchmarks, aligning yourself with what you want to create is essential. It’s a process of thinking about what emotions you think you will feel, what thoughts you will have, and how you will act when you achieve your goal. Spend some time creating a vivid picture in your mind of what your life will look like when you fulfill your vision. Try to actually experience how it will be before it becomes your reality.

  1. Train it

Now that you’ve properly set the stage, it’s time to get to work. The “train it’ step includes engaging a consistent practice of training your mind, emotions, and actions to support your vision of how your life will change when you have more self-confidence. Take 10-20 minutes each day to inhale slowly through your nose, count to four or five, hold a beat, and then exhale through your mouth slowly for four to five seconds. Repeat the cycle while focusing on relaxing your body. If you find your mind wanting to focus on particular thoughts, gently bring the focus back to your breathing. Once you feel relaxed, bring your vision into your mind and tell yourself all the ways in which you are moving towards your desired outcome.

  1. Reinforce it

After some time, it’s crucial to take stock of how it’s going. Describe what’s going well in your journey to confidence, and commit to continue doing those things. Note the areas that could be improved upon and how you plan to do better.

  1. Integrate It

Think about what you learned in the previous step and integrate your findings. It’s important to continually note where you’re having success and where you’re missing the mark. Be honest with yourself, but not too critical. Remember, it’s a learning process. You shouldn’t expect yourself to get it right without some adjustments. Measure your progress consistently over time and integrate what you learn to remain agile.

These steps are a proven method for achieving life-improving changes. If you can visualize who you will be when you have more confidence, start to experience what that will feel like, and consistently train, reinforce, and integrate what you learn about yourself, your confidence in your abilities at work will bloom.
