Narcissists are those self-centered, conceited, and manipulative beings that won’t ask for your permission to suck all the energy and happiness out of you and control your mind.

Narcissists are so good at lying and playing mind games that they can make you doubt your own logic and perception of reality to get what they need from you.

These sneaky monsters are everywhere around you. They can be that family member you’re very close to. They can be that loyal friend you’ve been best friends with for years. They can be that supportive co-worker whom you have absolute trust in. You simply can’t hide from them.

That’s why it’s important for you to be able to recognize and understand the characteristics of narcissists. Because only when you’re able to identify narcissists, will you be able to save yourself from falling into their trap.

Here are 6 manipulation techniques a narcissist will use to get what they need from you:

1. They will praise you, idealize you, and discard you.

A narcissist will shower you with compliments and sweet words and they will idealize you until they manage to convince you that they are kind, honest, and caring.

And when they notice that you’re falling for their tricks, i.e. that they have control over you, and when they get what they need from you, they won’t think twice about devaluing you and removing you from their life as if you were worthless.

2. They will hide their true colors.

In order to take advantage of you, a narcissist will hide their true self. They’ll do everything in their power to make you believe that they’re the sweetest, most compassionate, and most trustworthy person you’ve ever met.

And once they manage to convince you that they’re this kind of person, they’ll begin showing their true colors. They’ll start playing mind games with you. They’ll start gaslighting you, guilt-tripping you, and hurting your feelings. They’ll display such negative and hurtful behaviors that you’ll be left wondering where that sweet, caring person disappeared.

3. They will make you doubt your self-worth.

A narcissist will do everything in their power to find out what your insecurities and fears are. And once they succeed in this, they’ll use them against you.

They’ll make fun of your weaknesses, mistakes, and failures and they’ll bombard you with snide comments. They’ll make you feel like you’re the weakest, most flawed, and most unimportant person in the world.

4. They’ll involve a third person into the relationship so as to make you compete for their attention.

When a narcissist notices that you’re losing interest in them, they’ll be quick to tell you something, like, “I wish you would treat me more like her/him” so as to make you compete for their attention and/or affection.

Or if they notice that you’re trying to complain to them about their behavior, they’ll be quick to involve another person between you two in order to gain their support. Yes, this is how the twisted mind of a narcissist works.

5. They will blame you for things that are not your fault.

One thing a narcissist will never do is admit and take responsibility for their mistakes and wrongdoings. That’s why if a narcissist notices that you’re trying to complain to them about something bad they said or did to you, they’ll be quick to lay the blame at your door.

They’ll try to make you feel like you’re just exaggerating things. And to make themselves appear innocent, they won’t think twice about calling you “overly sensitive,” “dramatic,” or even “paranoid.”

6. They will take on different personas.

One minute they’ll be charming, compassionate, and caring and they’ll be selfish and inconsiderate the next. Because this is their way of controlling and manipulating others. This is their way of insuring that they have control over you, your emotions, and your actions.
