World’s First Edible 6-Pack Rings Feed Marine Animals Instead Of Strangling Them

Maybe you have seen some of the disturbing pictures of marine animals that are injured by six-pack rings and plastic waste.

Do you remember the poor sea turtle trapped in a 6-pack ring with its shell growing around its body for years giving her a peanut shape?

This sad example is one of the millions of such cases where plastic pollution damaged the marine ecosystems. Supposedly, this pollution destroys about 1 million sea animals every year, including 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles.

Luckily, the Saltwater Brewery in Florida together with the ad agency We Believers have made edible six-pack rings which are said to feed marine animals instead of strangling them.

They claim that they now strive to replace all the six-pack rings with edible ones. This would be about 400,000 cans a month and it will reportedly cost from 10 to 15 cents per ring which is way more expensive than a regular six-pack ring.

But, Saltwater Brewery is optimistic and really hopes to encourage other beer producing companies to implement their design of edible beer packages. And with many brewery companies following this trend, the price of the edible six-pack rings would be the same as the regular ones.

“If most craft breweries and big beer companies implement this technology, the manufacturing cost will drop and be very competitive compared with the current plastic solution, while saving hundreds of thousands of marine lives,” said Gustavo Lauria, the co-founder of We Believers.

The product is 100% biodegradable because it will be made only from recycled materials such as barley and wheat, so it will be completely safe for wildlife.

Also, the edible six-pack rings would be made from 100% photodegradable plastic which is not dangerous to marine animals.

What do you think of this idea? Do you think that it will be implemented?
